Highrise near Times Square in New York evacuated after garage fire

NEW YORK, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of people including Xinhua reporters and editors were evacuated from a 45-story building near Times Square, New York City, after a fire broke out in its parking garage. No injuries were reported.

The fire happened around 4:30 pm in a storage room of the 1540 Broadway tower on the West 45th street, said the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).

Some 26 fire trucks and 84 firefighters responded to the scene. And the fire was brought under control at around 5:30 pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Over 20 Xinhua reporters and editors had to walk all the way down from the 44th floor after the building's safety manager announced the evacuation order. They smelt smoke on several of the floors as they left the building.

The office of Xinhua North America is on the 44th floor of the building.
