NEW DELHI, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- At least one para-military trooper was killed and two others injured in an ambush on security forces by left-wing Naxalite rebels in the western Indian state of Maharashtra on Monday, police said.

The incident took place in the state's Gadchiroli district when a group of Central Reserve Police Force personnel were on a routine patrol.

"Armed Naxalites started firing at the patrol party, forcing the security personnel to retaliate in which one para-military trooper was killed and two sustained bullet wounds. The injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital," a police official said.

Additional security forces have been sent to the spot and a massive manhunt launched to track down the rebels who fled in the jungles after the ambush, he added.

Naxalites are active in Maharashtra and at least six other Indian states. In May, 15 Indian security personnel were injured in Gadchiroli when a vehicle of commandos came under a landmine attack allegedly by the rebels.

And in April, as many as 25 security personnel were martyed in a Naxalite attack in the central state of Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, the deadliest attack this year.
