NEW DELHI, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in Friday's building collapse in the western Indian state of Maharashtra has risen to four, officials said Saturday.

"With the recovery of more bodies from under the debris of the three-storied building that caved in at KG Nagar in Bhiwandi in the state's Thane district, the toll now stands at four," a senior disaster management official said.

Police have, meanwhile, arrested the owner of the building on charges of negligence. "The building owner is now in police custody," a senior police official said.

A throrough probe has been ordered into the incident, he added.

Building collapses are not uncommon in India, mostly due to poor construction standards and dilapidation. Every year, dozens of people are killed in building collapses across the country.

Earlier in August in a similar incident, a two-storey building collapsed in Bhiwandi, claiming eight lives.
