BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Singaporean police have solved a telecom and internet fraud case, according to China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) Friday.

The MPS sources said that police in Singapore received about 300 reports from Singaporean men deceived by fake instant messaging (IM) profiles claiming to offer sex services, with 880,000 Singaporean dollars involved.

According to a preliminary investigation by Singaporean police, suspects bought some IM accounts with profiles of elegant young ladies, changing the account addresses to Singapore, luring Singaporean men to hand over money by claiming to offer sex services. The fraudsters also threatened those who refused to pay.

Singaporean police contacted Chinese police after learning that the IM accounts originated from China.

Chinese police investigated the reports, and found 10 gangs operating in provinces of Guangdong, Anhui, Hubei and Jiangxi, and netted 49 criminal suspects, while Singaporean police arrested six. The case is still under investigation.
