HARARE, Nov. 24 (Xinhua)-- Zimbabwe's incoming President Emmerson Mnangagwa vowed to guarantee the safety of its former President Robert Mugabe and his family in Zimbabwe, the official Herald newspaper reported Friday.

"He (Mnangagwa) also assured the First Family not just of their own security and welfare, but the preservation of law and order throughout the country," the newspaper quoted Mugabe's outgoing spokesperson George Charamba as saying.

Mnangagwa, Charamba said, spoke to Mugabe Thursday when he formally informed Mugabe about his return to the country and briefed Mugabe about the preparations for his swearing-in on Friday.

Charamba said both of them agreed that Mugabe needed time to rest after the hectic events which led to his resignation on Tuesday and he may therefore not attend Mnangagwa's inauguration at the National Sports Stadium.
