LOS ANGELES, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- The temperature in downtown Los Angeles reached 91 Fahrenheit degrees (32.7 degrees centigrade) Thursday, making this year's Thanksgiving Day the hottest since 1877.

According to the National Weather Service, the high temperature has broken the heat record since official record began in 1877. The previous record, 90 Fahrenheit degrees (32.2 degrees centigrade), was set on Nov. 23, 1903.

Temperatures are expected to drop just a few Fahrenheit degrees, but they will still be about 20-25 Fahrenheit degrees higher than the average in many communities, National Weather Service meteorologist Rich Thompson was quoted as saying by the City News Service.

The unusual temperatures were the result of high pressure aloft combined with weak but warm offshore winds.

Temperature records for the date were also set in some other regions across Southern California. Long beach was 90 Fahrenheit degrees (32.2 degrees centigrade), breaking the record of 85 Fahrenheit degrees (29.4 degrees centigrade) set in 1990. Burbank reached 88 Fahrenheit degrees (31.1 degrees centigrade), the previous record was 86 Fahrenheit degrees (30 degrees centigrade) set in 1950.

Newport beach reached 89 Fahrenheit degrees (31.6 degrees centigrade), breaking the record of 81 Fahrenheit degrees (27.2 degrees centigrade) set in 2002. A temperature of 92 Fahrenheit degrees (33.3 degrees centigrade)also hit unparalleled peaks in Oxnard. The old record was 88 Fahrenheit degrees (31.1 degrees centigrade) set in 1950.

A drop in temperature in the regions across Southern California is expected on Friday.
