JERUSALEM, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Israel said Thursday it has caught a Hamas operative from Gaza who crossed into Israel in September, providing "a lot of information" about cross-border tunnels dug by Gaza militants.

Israel's Shin Bet security service said that Ahmad Majdi Mohammad Abid, a 23-year-old resident of the Shuja'iyya in Gaza City, crossed into Israeli in September and was immediately arrested.

On Thursday, he was indicted in the Beersheva District Court for "serious security offenses."

According to a statement released by the Shin Bet, during his questioning, Abid provided "a lot of information about the activity in the Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip, tunnels intended for offensive activity against Israel, and tunnels intended for fighting Israeli forces inside the Gaza Strip."

"His interrogation once again exposed Hamas' terror activity in the area of tunnels to promote terrorist activity against the State of Israel," the statement read.

The statement was released a day after Israel said it seized materials for preparing explosives from a truck that was carrying automobile oils from Israel into Gaza. The suspected materials were identified in a new lab installed at the Kerem Shalom Crossing between Israel and the besieged Palestinian enclave.

In October, Israel's military blew up a tunnel that reached from Gaza to Israel, killing at least a dozen Islamic Jihad militants. In the wake of the incident, the Islamic Jihad vowed to avenge the death of its fighters.

Israel carried out three large-scale military campaigns in Gaza, the last of which took place in 2014, claiming the lives of 2,251 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, and 71 people in Israel, mostly soldiers.
