MADRID, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Spanish national police on Tuesday confirmed that they have detained a suspected jihadist in the north African enclave of Melilla.

The 21-year-old Spanish citizen is the 254th person to have been detained for their relationship with the jihad since 2015. The police said they have also interviewed another two who he are thought to have tried to make indoctrination.

The Spanish Interior Ministry said the detainee is "self-indoctrinated" by watching "very explicit and violent" content on the Internet and "fully committed to the terrorist organization DAESH" (Islamic State), and had "carried out recruitment work using the Internet and social network sites."

He also maintained direct contact with individuals who have been condemned for forming part of DAESH, as well as indoctrinating and sending fighters from Melilla and Morocco to the conflict zone in Syria and Iraq, according to the ministry.

The ministry added that the operation had "neutralized a potential threat," highlighting the "full disposition of the terrorist organization to carry out attacks following the example of other terrorists who have committed attacks in Europe and the United States."
