TOKYO, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Tuesday as investor sentiment was bolstered by hopes for the health of the U.S. economy, while the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar gave some exporter issues here a boost.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 154.72 points, or 0.70 percent, from Monday to close the day at 22,416.48, marking its highest close since Nov. 10.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 11.48 points, or 0.65 percent, higher to close at 1,771.13.
Oil and coal product, nonferrous metal and machinery-linked stocks comprise those that gained the most by the close of play.
