SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least three militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed Tuesday in a fierce gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at village Magam-Handwara of frontier Kupwara district, about 80 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"This morning three militants of LeT were killed in a gunfight at Magam-Handwara," a police spokesman told Xinhua. "The operation in the area is going on."

The gunfight was triggered after joint contingents of Indian military, paramilitary and police cordoned off the area on specific intelligence inputs about presence of militants.

The identity of slain militants was being ascertained.

According to officials, Indian police or army have not suffered any damage in the stand-off.

Last week six militants and an Indian air force (IAF) commando were killed, while an army trooper was wounded in a similar gunfight in village Hajin of Bandipora district.

LeT outfit is accused of carrying out a terror attack on India's financial capital Mumbai in 2008. The attack claimed 166 lives.

Last month two militants and two IAF personnel were killed in a similar gunfight in the village.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
