TRIPOLI, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- German Ambassador to Libya, Christian Buck, on Monday confirmed his country's support for the UN-sponsored negotiations to amend the current Libyan political agreement.

Buck made his remarks during a meeting with the Libyan Head of the Higher Council of State, Abdurrahman Swehli, in the Libyan capital Tripoli.

According to the Council's media office, the meeting discussed political developments in Libya and the UN-proposed action plan.

"The meeting reviewed the restructuring of the military institution, where the Head of the Council stressed the need for the military institution to be fully under civil authority," the office said.

Swehli confirmed that "the only practical framework for managing the political process in Libya is the political agreement, which has no specific expiry date."

Swehli also said that the Council will next week discuss the possibility of holding early elections within six months if the political agreement fails.

Ambassador Buck praised Swehli's efforts to push forward the political process and achieve national reconciliation, stressing his country's support for the UN action plan and negotiations to amend the political agreement.

Despite signing a UN-sponsored peace agreement by the political parties and appointment of the Government of National Accord, Libya remains politically divided amid insecurity and chaos.

The UN Mission has recently sponsored dialogue meetings in Tunisia between representatives of the Libyan political parties in order to amend the political agreement, the first stage of an action plan proposed by the UN envoy to Libya and Head of the Mission, Ghassan Salame, in September that aims at ending the political division in the country.
