VIENNA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- The number of cars in Austria has increased 740,000 since 2005, meaning they have outpaced population growth by 40 percent, a new study has revealed.

The Verkehrsclub Osterreich (VCO) stated in a new report on Friday that the number of cars in the country are now about 4.9 million.

In 1990, there were 140 people for every 100 cars, whereas now this has dropped to just 115 people relative to that same number of vehicles.

It was further noted that cars are only driven for an average of one hour, and are parked for the remainder of the day.

The VCO said the developments in car use in the country thus show great potential for car sharing, and recommended Austria's new upcoming federal government to adopt some measures from Germany.
