JERUSALEM, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian teenager perpetrated a car-ramming attack in the West Bank on Friday, injuring two Israelis before he was shot and seriously wounded by troops, the military said.

The attack took place near Gush Etzion, a settlement bloc south of Jerusalem, on Friday morning.

Israel's emergency medical service said a 35-year-old Israeli man was seriously injured in the attack and a man in his seventies was lightly-to-moderately wounded.

A military spokesperson said in a statement that the assailant first drove his car towards the Efrat Junction and ran over Israeli, and then continued to the Gush Etzion Junction, running over a second civilian.

He proceeded by exiting the vehicle, armed with a knife, and attempted to stab soldiers who were guarding the junction. "The soldiers responded by firing towards the assailant, who as a result was severely injured," the statement read.

According to the statement, the assailant received medical care from the soldiers at the site.

The incident came after a relative calm in violence in the West Bank.

Israelis and Palestinians have seen a surge of violence that started in mid-September 2015. It has claimed the lives of at least 293 Palestinians, mostly were attackers, according to Israel, and 49 Jewish Israelis.

Israel accuses the Palestinian National Authority of "inciting" the unrest. The Palestinians say it is the result of 50 years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, home to more than 5 million Palestinians.
