NEW DELHI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Indian railway ministry officials Thursday said it would install bio-toilets in all its trains by the end of next year.
The decision was announced by a senior Indian railway ministry official, Ravindra Gupta, during his official tour to Germany.
"Under the dynamic guidance of Minister of Railways, Piyush Goyal, the target for 100 per cent completion of installing bio-toilets in coaches has been advanced to Dec. 2018," a railway spokesman quoted Gupta as having said.
According to a statement issued by ministry of railways, Gupta presented quintessential role of Indian railways in promoting sustainable mobility.
Toilets in Indian trains usually discharge in open on the tracks.
The Indian government in 2015 announced an investment of over 137 billion U.S. dollars over a period of five years to boost railways and modernise them on new lines.
Indian sprawling railways are the world's third largest network, ferrying around 23 million people each day.
