LONDON, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Security measures costing more than 2.5 million U.S. dollars are to be introduced around one of the British royal households, Windsor Castle, following this year's terror attacks here.

The money will be spent on installing permanent anti-terror barriers on roads surrounding Windsor Castle, an official for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead confirmed.

The cost will be covered by the council and Thames Valley Police, a council official confirmed to Xinhua.

Temporary barriers were used around the castle to prevent vehicle attacks after the terror attacks in London in which pedestrians were killed and injured when terrorists used their vehicles to plough into people.

There was criticism of the bulky metal barriers placed close to the castle to prevent a repeat attack in one of the most popular tourist attractions in the London area. Residents described to local media how the temporary barriers were "ugly and over the top".

The permanent barriers are being designed to offer protection, but to better blend into the immediate surroundings.

Phillip Bicknell, the council's cabinet member for highways, said it was important the appearance of the new permanent barriers did not detract from the historical setting.

The traditional Changing of the Guards ceremonies attract big crowds to the castle.

More than seven million tourists a year flock to Windsor to view the castle, which dates back to the 11th century, earning more than 650 million U.S. dollars for the local economy. Around 200,000 overseas visitors spend overnight stays in Windsor to soak up the history.
