LUSAKA, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Wednesday called for quick resolution to the crisis in neighboring Zimbabwe where the military had seized control of the government.

Lungu said he was working with other regional neighbors and carefully monitoring the evolving situation in Zimbabwe.

"I have encouraged all parties in Zimbabwe to work towards a quick and peaceful resolution to the impasse and to uphold human rights," Lungu said in a statement released by his spokesperson in Egypt where he is on a state visit.

The Zambian leader has sent his foreign affairs minister for a Southern African Development Community (SADC) Troika on Defense and Security meeting called to discuss the Zimbabwe crisis, he added.

Zimbabwe's military Wednesday announced it had taken over control of all government institutions. The 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe is reportedly under house rest.
