TEHRAN, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Death toll from the powerful earthquake in the west of Iran rose to 474 on Wednesday three days after the disaster, Tasnim news agency reported.

With the rescue teams still working in the quake-hit areas, the latest figures showed that 474 people have died and 9,388 others were wounded, the report said.

The Sunday night quake's epicenter, measuring 7.3 magnitude on the Richter scale, was located approximately 32 km south of the city of Halabja in a remote mountainous region of eastern Iraq, some 200 km northeast of Baghdad and 400 km west of Tehran.

So far, over 280 aftershakes varied from 4.5 to 6.1 magnitude have hit the region.

In a visit to the quake-hit areas on Tuesday, President Hassan Rouhani said the earthquake has destroyed 11,000 rural houses and 4,500 urban dwellings, noting that a total of 30,000 houses should be reconstructed.

Iran's administrative and military forces in Iran have joined hands to assist with the rescue and relief operation, Rouhani said.
