RIGA, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Acknowledging differing positions on issues such as the Ukraine conflict in talks with a Russian minister on Tuesday, Latvia's foreign minister said Latvia was willing "to carry forward practical cooperation with Russia in matters where it is possible under present circumstances".

Latvian foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics made the comments in his meeting with Russia's first deputy minister of foreign affairs, Vladimir Titov, in Riga as part of regular political consultations, the Latvian foreign ministry informed.

As neighboring countries, it is essential for Latvia and Russia to continue work on various practical matters, the Latvian minister said.

Rinkevics also praised the performance of the Latvian-Russian intergovernmental commission and the Latvian-Russian border demarcation panel.

According to Titov, although relations between Russia and Latvia were not at their highest point at the moment, finding common ground on a number of issues was still possible.

At the end of the consultations, the sides inked two bilateral accords -- one of them facilitating the cross-border movement of Latvian and Russian citizens living in border areas, and the other providing a plan for cooperation between the Latvian and Russian foreign ministries in 2018 and 2019.

The political consultations between the Latvian and Russian diplomats also touched upon international affairs like developments in Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and the Middle East, the Latvian foreign ministry said.
