NEW DELHI, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- A young woman in southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu was burnt alive allegedly by her stalker, police said Tuesday.
The victim's mother and sister also suffered burn injuries while trying to save her.
The incident took place late Monday night in Adambakkam area of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
The deceased woman was identified as Induja and her mother and sister are undergoing treatment at hospital.
"Induja was burnt to death and her mother and sister have suffered burns while trying to save her," a police official said. "The victim's mother has suffered 49 percent burns, while as her sister has been admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit."
According to police, the accused was on run following the incident.
Reports said the man was stalking and harassing Induja and claimed to be in love with her.
In August this year a 15-year-old girl's hand was chopped off by her stalker in Uttar Pradesh state.
Sexual attacks on women and girls in India put a question mark on their safety and efficiency of police force in the country.
In December 2012 a fatal gang-rape of a medical student in New Delhi brought spotlight on crimes against women in India.
The incident saw huge protests and resulted in new anti-rape laws in the country. However, brutal sexual attacks against women continue to be reported across India.
