WEINAN, China, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Some 12,000 runners from 13 countries and regions took part in the "Fruits" Marathon Weinan 2017 on Sunday in Dali, a county in Nouthwest China's Shaanxi Province.

A total of 12,000 runners attended the event which started at 9:00 a.m. at Tongzhouhu lake park and 1,800 of them challenged themselves in full marathon.

Kibiwot Geofrey from Kenya, clocked 2:21:36 to win the race. Kenya's Bethwel Yegon trailed in 2:22:22, while his fellow countryman Simon Mwangi finished third in 2:23:20.

"I set my personal best here because this is the first full marathon I've ever attend. The race is very tough but I really enjoy the cheers from the people along the track. They are the best," said Geofrey.

In the women's race, Kenya's runner Florence Chepkurui claimed the title in 2:57:35. Her compatriots Milkah Kona and Esther Enyaman placed second and third respectively.

As Dali is known for its fruits, the organizers set up eight service stations offering the runners fresh fruits, including such as Dali winter jujube, Baishui apple, Pucheng pear and Linwei grape along the race route.

"The experience is amazing. I tasted many juicy fruits during the race. I guess I don't need to have lunch today." said Li Shuren, a participant from Xi'an, with a fruit basket style finisher medal in hand.
