RABAT, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Judo World Championships 2017 started in the Moroccan city of Marrakech on Saturday, featuring 58 judokas, including 40 men and 18 women, from 28 countries and regions.
The two-day tournament is organized for the first time in an African country.
The World Championships 2017 also represents a new chapter for prize money in judo.
A record amount of prize money will be on the table. Gold medallists will earn a record 100,000 Euro with silver medallists scooping 50,000 Euro and bronze medallists taking home 25,000 Euro.
The prize money continues beyond the medallists as judoka who finish fifth will earn 10,000 Euro while a seventh-place is worth 5,000 Euro.
