HONG KONG, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- More than 274,000 people have registered as organ donors in Hong Kong, secretary for health of the government of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) announced Saturday.

Speaking at a ceremony celebrating Hong Kong's Organ Donation Day 2017 and the Centralized Organ Donation Register's ninth anniversary, HKSAR government's Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan said that more than 274,000 people have registered as donors in the Centralized Organ Donation Register.

Chan said more than 550 organizations, enterprises and schools have supported and signed the Organ Donation Promotion Charter since its launch in June, 2016.

The Charter Signatories pledged to promote the culture of organ donation internally and in the community, she added.

However, Chan pointed out that various studies show some people still avoid talking about organ donation.

Saturday's event aimed to promote the message that organ donation is not a taboo subject and encourage residents to share their wish to donate organs with their families.

"We encourage the public to have more discussions on organ donation and give it more thought so as to change their perception on the matter," Chan said.
