SOFIA, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian President Rumen Radev announced here at a special ceremony on Wednesday that the country would send its 26th scientific expedition to Antarctica.

The expedition team, which consists of 23 Bulgarians and nine foreigners, will reside at the Bulgarian Antarctic base St. Kliment Ohridski on Livingston Island from next week until the end of March.

The research of Antarctica was increasingly important for revealing the great potential of this continent and the alarming climate change, Radev said at the ceremony during which he handed the national flag to expedition leader, Professor Christo Pimpirev.

The scientific program of this Bulgarian expedition includes studying the changes in sea level and frozen soil as well as geological and seismic research, Radev said.

According to Radev, the expedition was a continuation of the rich traditions that Bulgaria had in the study of the white continent.

Bulgaria, one of the 30 countries that have bases in Antarctica, established its base on Livingston Island in 1988.
