KABUL, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Afghan police have detained 14 people in connection with nine drug related cases within the past week, authorities said Wednesday.

The criminals, according to a statement released by the Counter-Narcotics Criminal Justice Task Force of Afghanistan (CJTF), were detained in Kabul, Takhar, Faryab, Helmand, Farah and Jawzjan provinces, where a large amount of drugs have also been seized within the past seven days.

One of the arrestees was a person planning to transfer heroin to India, the statement added.

"Some 29 kg of heroin, more than 14 kg of morphine, over 1,638 kg of opium, 17 kg of hashish and 165 liters of acid (used for changing opium to heroin)...as well as 10 mobile phones, and five different vehicles were among the drug and materials seized by Counter-Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA)," the statement added.

After the initial investigation, the CNPA handed over the cases to the Central Narcotics Tribunal (CNT), a special Afghan court for jurisdiction of major drug cases, the statement further said.

The war-affected Afghanistan has become the hub of much of the world's opium poppy cultivation and production, particularly in its western and southern provinces with poor security situation.
