China has over 228,000 journalists

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- China has over 228,000 journalists holding valid press cards, according to a statement released Tuesday by China's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT).

Nearly 84,000 worked for newspapers and over 6,000 for periodicals, according to the SAPPRFT.

It added that about 2,800 journalists were employed by news agencies, over 134,000 worked for radio, TV stations or production firms, and about 1,100 were employed by news websites.

About 39 percent of the journalists were aged between 30 and 40, and 33 percent were aged between 40 and 50.

Men accounted for over 51 percent of all journalists.

China has designated Nov. 8 as the country's Journalist Day, the date the young Chinese journalists' association was formed in 1937.

This Wednesday marks China's 18th Journalist Day.
