Two Rwandese nationals killed, one injured in road accident in western Uganda

KAMPALA, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Two Rwandese nationals were killed and one critically injured in a road accident in Uganda's western district of Kabale on Monday, a police spokesperson in the region said.

Elly Matte, the Kigezi regional police spokesperson, said in a statement the accident took place at around 8:00 a.m. local time after a driver of the Rwandan Fuso lorry truck rammed into a Ugandan registered sedan car in Kabale town.

Etieno Hakuzimana, a 40-year-old Fuso Lorry driver and a resident of Kayonza in the capital Kigali, 19-year-old Marie Vian Nzeyimana, one of the lorry occupants and a resident of Bulera, Kigali were killed on spot, while 33 year old turnman, Jian Sinibagiwe was rushed to Kabale Hospital for treatment.

The lorry loaded with maize grain was coming from the Ugandan western district of Kasese heading to the Rwandan capital, Kigali.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kabale Regional Hospital pending a postmortem examination.

The driver of the sedan car, Haruna Kasule, a Ugandan is under detention at Kabale police station.

The fatal accident comes barely two days after six Rwandan students studying in Uganda perished in a Saturday road accident in the central district of Nakasongola.

Uganda registers at least 20,000 accidents with over 2,000 deaths each year, making it one of the countries with the highest road accident fatality rates in the world, according to police figures.

The main causes of road accidents in the East African country include careless driving, speeding, driver fatigue and poor road conditions.
