Clashes leave 16 militants dead in N. Afghan provinces

PUL-E-KHUMRI, Afghanistan, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Sixteen militants were killed and 12 others wounded following consecutive clashes between Afghan forces and Taliban militants in northern Baghlan and nearby Jawzjan provinces Monday, an army official said.

"The first incident took place in Band-e-Dwo area of the Baghlan's provincial capital Pul-e-Khumri, where 12 insurgents loyal to the Taliban were killed and 11 others wounded," Nastraullah Jamshidi, a press officer of army Corps 209 Shaheen based in the region, told Xinhua.

Elsewhere in the Jawzjan province, four militants were killed and another was wounded, following the launch of an army operation codenamed Naweed-7 along Daulat Abad district road, according to the source.

The Taliban militants who are fighting government forces had not commented on the report.
