LOS ANGELES, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- A Koenigsegg Agera RS Saturday set the new highest speed world record for production vehicle with a two-way average speed of 277.9 miles per hour (444.6 kilometers per hour) on a part of public highway in state of Nevada.
"A Koenigsegg Agera RS driven by Koenigsegg factory driver, Niklas Lilja, has completed high speed runs in Pahrump, NV, today. The average speed achieved, measuring runs in both directions, was 447.0 km/h (277.9 mph). This is a new world record for a production vehicle. All data recorded and verified on site by Racelogic." Koenigsegg announced Saturday night on its official tweeter page.
In order to challenge the former record of 268 miles per hour (455.6 Kilometers per hour) which was set by in 2010 by a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, an 11-mile (18.7 kilometers) section of state Route 160 between Las Vegas and Pahrump in Nevada was temporary closed for hours.
Patrick Wang, founder of Purist Group, a super car charity organization based in Los Angeles and invited to Saturday's event, told Xinhua that totally 6 Koenigsegg Agera RS cars showed on the racing road, a red one which set the new record was equipped with a 1,360 bhp RS's 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and removable roll-cage.
Guinness World Records, the arbiter of such things, defines a production car as a vehicle in its original condition, with no modifications or adjustments other than those offered as factory options by the manufacturer.
But there are no stipulations on how many of the cars must be produced, so only a handful of hyper-specialized and expensive sports cars are usually in competition for the record.
"Koenigsegg has capability to made Agera RS about 15 sets one year, " Patrick Wang told Xinhua Sunday, "There are about 60 to 70 sets all in the world, every one costs about 5 million dollars."
