"Thor: Ragnarok" dominates North American box office in opening weekend

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Disney and Marvel's "Thor: Ragnarok" dominated North American box office with an estimated 121 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend.

It's the 7th best November opening ever and the fourth best opening of 2017 thus far, marking the 17th consecutive NO.1 Marvel Cinematic Universe debut out of 17 films. Combined with an estimated international cume of 306 million U.S. dollars, "Thor: Ragnarok's" estimated global cume stands at 427.0 million through Nov. 5, according to the studio figures collected by comScore.

Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, the super hero film that based on the Marvel Comics character Thor is the sequel to 2011's "Thor" and 2013's "Thor: The Dark World."

"The film is already a moviegoer favorite with a perfect score on comScore/Screen Engine's PostTrak audience survey, generating a rare 5 out of 5 star rating as it inspires a full 30 percent of moviegoers to vow to see it again in theaters while a whopping 31 percent say they will buy the film on Blu-ray disc," wrote movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore in an email to Xinhua.

"Notably, a survey leading 85 percent give Ragnarok' a Definite Recommend' to their friends and as one of the best reviewed films of the Marvel Universe, this Thor' installment is poised to ignite a huge debut weekend and a great start to a potentially record breaking month of November at the box office, " wrote Dergarabedian.

Another new comer, STX's "A Bad Moms Christmas" opened in second place with an estimated 17.03 million U.S. dollars this weekend. Directed and written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore,the Christmas comedy film is a sequel to 2016's "Bad Moms." The film is a hit with women in comScore/Screen Engine's PostTrak audience survey with 73 percent of the audience made up of females.

Lionsgate's horror film "Jigsaw" moved to the third place this weekend with an estimated 6.7 million U.S. dollars in its second weekend, pushing it's total to 28.8 million U.S. dollars after 10 days in North American theaters. It's the eighth film in the "Saw" franchise.

Lionsgate's low-budget Halloween offering "Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween" landed in the fourth place with an estimated 4.65 million U.S. dollars in its third weekend.

Warner Bros.' environmental disaster thriller "Geostorm" finished fifth with an estimated 3.03 million U.S. dollars in its third weekend. The world total of the film is 62.9 million U.S. dollars to date.
