TIRANA, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Over one ton of narcotic plants, namely cannabis sativa, were seized Saturday noon by the Police of Tirana in Albania's capital city, Albanian state police informed in a press release.
"The amount of cannabis was seized by police officers during two separate operations held in the last hours," Ardi Veliu, director of Tirana Police, told reporters in a press conference.
Veliu informed that six persons were arrested while three others were being searched by the state police.
They are all accused of producing and trading narcotics.
Apart from the drugs totalling 1,290 kg, the police also seized a machine gun that belonged to one of the arrested.
Albanian government has put the fight against cannabis cultivation and trading as one of its top priorities during this mandate while Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama stated few months ago that the cultivation of drugs in Albanian territory would be eradicated within this year.
