HOUSTON, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Parade celebrating the first World Series title for Houston's baseball team started Friday afternoon with hundreds of thousands of fans in downtown Houston, Texas, the United States.

Fans started showing before dawn Friday morning to find a spot along the parade route to celebrate the Astros' win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in 7 games.

The parade, which comes less than 10 weeks after Harvey's floodwaters deluged the city, started at 2 p.m. and conclude with a public ceremony hosted by Houston mayor Sylvester Turner.

The day has turned into a local holiday, with the Houston Independent School District (ISD) Texas' largest school district, even cancelling classes so that students and their families could attend.

According to ESPN, players with the World Series trophy, management, team owner Jim Crane and Astros mascot Orbitare are expected to be there.

"It's a true privilege to proudly host this magnificent salute to our hometown team that has earned history," Turner was quoted by ESPN as saying on Thursday.

The Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series held on Wednesday night at Los Angeles, winning their first World Series title in franchise history.
