Shanghai Shenhua striker supports persons with disabilities in Lagos

LAGOS, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Super League side Shanghai Greenland Shenhua striker, Obafemi Martins, has donated hospital equipment and mobility aids worth thousands of U.S. dollars to the southwest Nigeria's Lagos state government.

The gesture was part of the mission of his foundation, Obafemi Martins Foundation (OMF), the former Inter Milan FC player said while presenting the equipment to the state governor Akinwunmi Ambode in Lagos on Thursday.

The equipment include 185 wheel chairs, 100 baby cots, 180 crutches, 60 hospital beds, 13 electronic wheelchairs and 400 pieces of white canes for the blind.

The former Inter Milan and Newcastle forward expressed confidence that his contribution to the society would impact positively on lives.

Earlier, Ambode hailed Martins for the donation, describing it as a worthy, noble and selfless act which demonstrated the football star's commitment to the country, especially Lagos State.

The governor gave the assurance that the equipment would be used judiciously.

He called on other well meaning individuals to emulate Martins by giving back to the society.
