LAMU, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's military said Friday its troops killed two Al-Shabaab militants on Thursday evening in a foiled attack in the restive coastal Lamu County.

Kenya Defence Force (KDF) spokesperson David Obonyo said the soldiers have also intensified manhunt for wounded Al-Shabaab militants in the region which has experienced a series of attacks this year.

KDF troops on patrol in Witu area, Lamu County, engaged and killed two Al-Shabaab militants on Thursday evening. The operation is ongoing, Obonyo said.

"We are still pursuing the militants who escaped during the fierce gun battle to the Boni forest. We believe the numbers of those killed could rise," he said by telephone.

The incident came barely a week after four Al-Shabaab militants were killed in battle with KDF troops at Mararani area in Lamu East.

Four AK-47 rifles, bomb making materials, six magazines, three grenades, three car batteries, rolls of cables, three mobile phones and assorted food stuffs were found at the camp.

Obonyo said the military has scaled up operations in Boni forest to flush out the militants behind sporadic terror attacks targeting both civilians and security agents in the Coastal region.

KDF is leading the latest onslaught against the group blamed for a series of sporadic attacks in Coast and northern Kenya

Obonyo said more military personnel with armoured personnel carrier (APC) have launched both aerial and ground operation targeting the militants.

A military source indicates that Al-Shabaab militant group is planning more attacks in Lamu ahead of December holiday.
