TRIPOLI, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- The British government has provided 4 million U.S. dollars worth of demining equipment to the Libyan government to remove landmines in the city of Sirte.

"The British government has delivered 4 million U.S. dollars equipment to the Libyan authorities to help make Sirte safe," the British Embassy to Libya said on social media Thursday.

"This equipment is part of a broader package of UK assistance to help stabilize Libya which includes training to help remove landmines and improvised explosive devices from Sirte, Benghazi and other areas across Libya," the embassy added.

The International Stability and Security Company JANUS will provide training to Libyan military engineers and police on use of the delivered equipment, the embassy said.

"This equipment is a tangible sign of the UK's commitment to helping the people of Sirte, Benghazi, and other areas rebuild their lives after the defeat of Daesh. A stable, secure, and prosperous Libya is in our shared interest," said British Ambassador to Libya, Peter Millett.

Since the forces of the UN-backed Government last year defeated IS affiliates and took over the city of Sirte, located some 450 km east the capital Tripoli, the city has been suffering from remnants of munitions of the fighting, as well as landmines laid by IS in a number of districts and neighborhoods.
