LHASA, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Traffic has resumed after a snowstorm closed the Tanggula mountain section of a highway in Tibet Autonomous Region, the local government said on Thursday.

Nearly 1,000 vehicles carrying over 1,300 people were stranded along a 60-km stretch of national highway 109, according to the emergency office of Amdo county, Nagqu prefecture.

Snow has been falling in Amdo since Sunday.

One driver died and two more people were taken to hospital, the office said.

More than 200 police, medical personnel, fire-fighters and maintenance workers were dispatched to the scene. Excavators and other heavy machinery were brought to clear the road.

Rescue workers brought food, water and oxygen to help drivers and passengers overcome high altitude sickness and hunger.

Drivers and passengers were provided with accommodation in the county seat before their departure, said Xiong Chuan, Communist Party secretary of Amdo county.
