TALUQAN, Afghanistan, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- At least five civilians were killed and 13 others wounded when two rival armed groups clashed in northern Afghanistan's province of Takhar, local police said Thursday.

"The incident occurred late on Wednesday night, when two armed groups entered a fierce fight in the relatively secure Chah Ab district, leaving five civilians dead and 13 others, including a district police chief and two policemen, wounded," Khalil Asir, provincial police spokesman, told Xinhua.

Sporadic clashes continued in some parts of the district township on Thursday morning, said the source adding security forces arrived at the scene to calm down the skirmish.

Ordinary Afghans usually suffer at the hands of irresponsible armed groups, particularly in remote areas, where the government control is weak.
