RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian government on Wednesday condemned the attack in New York City, which left eight people dead and a dozen others injured.

On Tuesday afternoon, the attacker, who has been identified as Sayfullo Saipov, plowed a pickup truck down a busy bike path in Lower Manhattan.

The slain victims include six foreign tourists, five from Argentina and one from Belgium.

In a statement released by the Foreign Ministry, the Brazilian government condemned the attack and expressed its condolences to the families of the victims.

"The Brazilian government condemns the terrorist attack that occurred yesterday, October 31, in New York City, which resulted in the deaths of eight people," it said.

"Brazil expresses its condolences to the families of the victims, offers wishes of quick recovery to the injured," the ministry added.

Saipov has been arrested by police and is now in custody. He faces two charges, namely, providing material support for a terrorist organization, specifically the Islamic State, and a federal charge of violence and destruction of a motor vehicle with willful disregard for human life.
