LISBON, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was here on Monday to take part in a Portuguese Council of State meeting.

"It is an honor for I know it is rare for a Portuguese to be invited to these meetings," Junker said. The EC president was invited to take part in the meeting by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Junker spoke briefly to the press outside the presidential palace where he spoke about Portugal's wild fires. Over 100 people have died in wild fires in Portugal in the last four months.

"I would like to express my condolences to all the families, the men, women and children who were victims of this natural disaster," Junker said.

Junker met Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, earlier in the day and promised to revamp the European Union's civil protection procedures.

"We will do everything we can to show Europe's solidarity with Portugal," he added.
