VIENNA, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- The number of cybercrime offences in Austria was recorded at 13,103 in 2016, an increase of 31 percent, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BK) said in a report on Monday.

The BK said the percentage of cases solved declined slightly to 38.7 percent, and it put down to growing criminal activity on the darknet, along with the increasingly technical nature of resolving cybercrimes.

Notable problem areas the authorities faced last year were ransomware, where malicious software is used to lock the contents of a computer until a ransom is paid, as well as a shift into the payment for criminal activities to virtual currencies such as bitcoin.

Through the use of online services, users can also attempt to cover the trail for these currencies, making them more difficult to track.
