ISLAMABAD, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and two others injured in a road accident in Pakistan's southwestern province of Balochistan on Sunday, local media reported.

According to the reports, the accident occurred when two cars collided with each other at the National Highway near Surab area of Kalat district in Balochistan. Rescue teams and police rushed to the site and shifted the bodies and injured to the District Headquarters Hospital in Kalat.

Two women and a child were among the deceased persons.

Local media quoted police as saying that the accident took place when a driver lost control over his overspeeding vehicle and rammed into another car coming from the opposite direction.

Six people lost their lives on the spot while another succumbed to his injuries during his treatment at the hospital.

Road accidents frequently happen in Pakistan mainly due to poorly maintained roads, violation of road safety rules and reckless driving.

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, around 9,000 road accidents are reported every year since 2011 in the country, killing more than 4,500 people on average annually.

Traffic police officials said that 90 percent of the accidents in Pakistan are caused merely by human errors.
