Indonesia extends again emergency status for menacing Bali volcano

JAKARTA, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Balinese authority has lengthened emergency status again for Mount Agung volcano in Indonesia's Bali Island as it remains in the highest alert, a senior official said here Saturday.

The extension kicked off on Oct. 27 and will terminate on Nov. 9, spokesman of national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho revealed.

"The extension aims at paving the access for the authority in handling and anticipating the threat of eruption," he told Xinhua in a text message.

Currently a total of 133,475 evacuees are taking shelters in evacuation centers and thousands others allegedly remain in dangerous zones, according to Sutopo.

A total of 1,100 people were killed in the latest eruption of the Mount Agung volcano in 1963.
