BRUSSELS, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Members of the European parliament on Thursday called for strong measures to fight against sexual harassment and abuse.

European lawmakers passed a resolution by 580 votes to 10, with 27 abstentions, according to a European parliament statement.

The parliament reiterated its 2014 call on the European Commission to propose an EU-wide strategy to protect women against violence, including sexual harassment and sexual abuse of women and girls.

In the resolution, MEPs also called for measures to tackle under-reporting, especially by the most vulnerable; and requesting a task force of independent experts to examine the situation in the parliament.

MEPs debated sexual harassment on Wednesday in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal in the Hollywood and press allegations regarding incidents in the parliament.

According to the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights study from 2014 on violence against women, more than half of all women (55 percent) have experienced sexual harassment and 33 percent have experienced physical or sexual violence since the age of 15. Endi
