BARCELONA, Spain, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Catalan regional leader Carles Puigdemont on Thursday said that he would not call snap regional elections for now.

Speaking before a meeting of the Catalan Parliament, Puigdemont said he had "considered the possibility of calling elections" in an attempt to prevent the Spanish government passing Article 155 of the Spanish constitution to suspend Catalan autonomy.

"I was ready to call these elections whenever there were guarantees," said Puigdemont, adding his duty was to "cause the least damage to our institutions", and adding that "no guarantees had been forthcoming".

The declaration came after several hours of uncertainty after Puigdemont postponed two planned appearances before finally taking to the stage two and a half hours later.
