GENEVA, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Emmy Award has given a primetime Emmy to High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), the primary coding format for Ultra-High Definition (UHD) TV, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) said on Wednesday.

It's the second primetime Emmy Award to recognize the collaborative video coding work of ITU, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

In 2008, a Primetime Emmy Award was given to H.264 MPEG-4 AVC, an advanced, video compression method produced by a joint team from the three organizations for substantially reducing the bandwidth needed to deliver high quality video and the space required to store it.

HEVC was released in 2013 to support the next decade of innovation in video and more video at higher quality on the available bandwidth.

It needs half the bit rate of H.264 MPEG-4 AVC, delivering an HD viewing experience while concurrently enabling operators to utilize network capacity more efficiently. The standard has proven especially valuable in accelerating the rollout of UHD, including UHD 4K and 8K TV.

HEVC also enables high-dynamic-range as well as wide-color-gamut coding, and has been selected as the primary format for the delivery of full 10-bit UHD video. Its support for synthetic content, scalable coding, 3D and multi-view enables new applications with feature-rich experiences beyond traditional camera-content broadcasting and teleconferencing.

Currently, HEVC is at play in all UHD distribution channels, from mobile broadband to satellite, cable and fiber-optic communications. The standard is supported by all UHD viewing devices, whether traditional televisions, tablets or smartphones.
