Georgia's ex-president says to appeal against Ukrainian citizenship loss

KIEV, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Former Georgian President and ex-governor of Ukraine's Odessa region, Mikheil Saakashvili, here on Wednesday said he will contest the loss of his Ukrainian citizenship in the court.

"Finally, we have received the documents from the presidential administration on the citizenship case. We will appeal against the deprivation of my citizenship," Saakashvili told reporters.

The politician said he intended to lodge the appeal to the court in the coming days.

On Tuesday, the State Migration Service of Ukraine has rejected a political asylum application from Saakashvili, paving the way for politician's extradition to Georgia.

Saakashvili, 49, served two terms as Georgian president from 2004 to 2013. He was granted Ukrainian citizenship in May 2015 and appointed governor of Odessa.

On July 26 this year, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko revoked Saakashvili's Ukrainian citizenship for allegedly submitting false information while applying for a Ukrainian passport.

Two months later, the Georgian Chief Prosecutor's Office asked Kiev to take measures for Saakashvili's extradition.

Saakashvili has been put on the wanted list in Georgia over charges of corruption, abuse of power and embezzlement.
