DHAKA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh is experiencing slow Internet as the country's first undersea cable, SEA-ME-WE-4, has been shut down Tuesday afternoon for repairs, an official said.
The official of the Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd (BSCCL) told Xinhua that Internet users in capital Dhaka and elsewhere in the country would likely face poor connectivity for the next three days from Tuesday.
The SEA-ME-WE-4, which for the fist time in its history of 12 years, was shut down for repairs at a depth of 115 km in the Bay of Bengal from its landing station in Cox's Bazar district, 292 km southeast of capital Dhaka, he said.
The (BSCCL) official said the second submarine cable, SEA-ME-WE-5, however, remains fully operational.
Bangladeshi State Minister for Telecoms Tarana Halim had ealirer said internet speed in Bangladesh may slow between Oct. 24 and Oct. 26 due to repairs on the first submarine cable.
Bangladesh was connected with its second submarine cable system called South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5) with a design capacity of 1,500 Gbps in September this year.
