HANOI, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- A send-off ceremony for security guards and a counter-terrorism exercise were held in Vietnam's central city of Da Nang on Tuesday to ensure security at the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Week.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked authorities to be fully aware of the importance of the series of meetings slated for Nov. 6-11, with the participation of leaders and some 10,000 delegates from 21 APEC member economies, Vietnam News Agency reported.

The authorities must ensure absolute security for this event, the prime minister said.

The ceremony and exercise involved thousands of police officers from the Ministry of Public Security along with local residents.

Deputy Minister of Public Security Bui Van Nam said a sub-committee for security and health care has worked with four other sub-committees and the APEC 2017 National Secretariat to ensure security for the APEC meetings this year.

Vietnam, which joined APEC in 1998, is hosting the APEC events in 2017 under the theme of "Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future."
