WINDHOEK, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Namibia has seen a major drop in cases of rhinoceros and elephant poaching this year, the environment minister said on Monday.
The country recorded 27 cases of rhinoceros poaching so far this year, compared to 60 in 2016 and 95 in 2015, Environment Minister Pohamba Shifeta said.
The number of elephant poached during the same period, at 20, compared to 101 in 2016 and 49 in 2015, Shifeta said.
The minister attributed the decrease in poaching incidents to strengthened efforts by relevant authorities.
"More resources have been allocated to fight poaching and more government agencies, international development partners and the communities have come on board to support our efforts to halt poaching," he said.
Authorities have arrested 75 people in connection with poaching incidents and confiscated 30 rhino horns and 103 elephant tusks so far this year, Shifeta said.
