MOSCOW, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Border Guards Service said Monday it had detained a heavily armed Ukrainian national who attempted to cross the Russian border illegally.
A 31-year-old Ukrainian, attempting to cross the border in the Russian Kursk region, opened fire at the border guards who stopped him and "received gunshot wounds of moderate severity" during the return fire, it said in a statement.
The offender carried an entire arsenal of two pistols with 50 5.45 mm caliber cartridges, five hand grenades and 26 ampoules with a liquid substance of gray color, presumably mercury, the statement said.
The Border Guards Service provided no further details, noting that investigation of the incident has been underway.
