LONDON, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Parts of Britain on Saturday were battered by winds of almost 80mph and heavy rains as storm Brian crossed the Irish Sea after causing flooding in some parts of Ireland.

A yellow weather warning for winds across a swath of Britain, including Wales and southern England up to the Midlands and North West, will remain in place until midnight on Saturday.

Gusts of 78mph, the highest recorded on Saturday afternoon, struck the Llyn Peninsula on the northwest coast of Wales, the Met Office said.

Dozens of flights and ferry crossings have been cancelled because of the high winds, with British Airways cutting 10 flights to and from Heathrow to reduce the number of aircraft movements at the airport.

Yellow strong wind warnings cover much of Wales and south and west England. There are a number of flood alerts in place, to "be prepared".

National Rail warned the stormy weather could impact on train services, with emergency speed restrictions imposed on most of the routes in Wales.

The storm came just days after three people were killed and hundreds of thousands of people -- mostly in the Irish Republic -- were left without power after the remnants of Storm Ophelia battered the British Isles after weakening from its earlier hurricane force.
